Scoliosis

About two percent of people are affected by this deformation of the spine, which causes the normally straight spine to curve.

What causes scoliosis?

Scoliosis can be hereditary, but in many cases the cause is unknown. Often times it develops just before puberty and will cause the spine to have a “C” or an “S” shape. In adults, scoliosis may occur due to a worsening curvature from childhood, or it could be caused from degenerative disc disease of the spine.

What are the symptoms?

  • Limited movement
  • Uneven shoulders
  • Uneven waist
  • Elevated hip

A person experiencing any of these symptoms should see a physician for an accurate diagnosis. It can also bring on pain and reduced ability to breathe if a misshapen rib cage restricts normal lung growth.
